VRE SCREEN, PCR

A. Collection Containers


1. Molecular Testing Swab (preferred)
2. BBL CultureSwab Liquid Stuart single or double swab
3.  Copan Venturi Transystem Liquid Stuart single or double swab
4.  Copan Transystem Liquid Stuart single or double swab
5.  Cepheid Sample Collection Device

B. Procedure

1. Rectal Swab Specimen (FDA Approved)

a. Using the double Molecular Testing Swab, insert both swabs 1-1.5 inches into the anus/rectum.                
b.  Gently swirl (3) times. 
c.  Carefully remove swabs and place in the labeled, swab collection container. 
d.  Store and transport to the laboratory at room temperature (18-25°C).

2. Perianal Swab Specimens

a. Using the double Molecular Testing Swab, swab the perianal
    area (3) times – swab like you are wiping after a bowel movement.
b.  Carefully place swab in the labeled, swab collection container.
c.  Store and transport to the laboratory at room temperature (18-25°C).

1. Molecular Testing Swab (preferred)
2. Sterile Specimen container
3. Enteric Transport Media
4. BD Culture Swab
5. Copan Transystem Liquid Stuart Swab
6. Health Link Transporter Liquid Stuart Swab
7. ESwab

B. Procedure

1. Perianal specimens (preferred specimen)

a. Using the double Molecular Testing Swab, swab the
perianal area (3) times (i.e. swab like you are wiping after a bowel
movement).
b. Carefully add the swabs to the appropriately labeled transport
container.
c. Store and transport at room temperature (18-25°C).

2. Rectal Specimens

a. Using the double Molecular Testing Swab, insert the swabs approximately 2.5 cm beyond the anal sphincter.
b. Gently rotate the swabs 5 times to sample the anal crypts.
c. Carefully add the swabs to the appropriately labeled transport
container.
d. Store and transport at room temperature (18-25°C).
