SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Plasma: Centrifuge at 1100-2000 g for a minimum of 10 minutes.
Serum: Allow to clot. Centrifuge at 1100-2000 g for a minimum of 10 minutes. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature or frozen specimen also acceptable.
Specimen stability:
Spun SST: Room temperature: 24 hours. Refrigerated: 4 days. Frozen: 1 year. Spun PST: 12 hours.
Rejection criteria:
Stability limits exceeded.

Clinical significance:
An increased phosphorus with a decreased calcium suggests either hypoparathyroidism or renal disease. A decreased phosphorus and an increased calcium suggests hyperparathyroidism or sarcoidosis.

Decreased phosphorus and calcium may indicate malabsorption, vitamin D deficiency and renal tubular acidosis. Increased phosphorus and calcium suggest milk-alkali syndrome or hypervitaminosis D.
