Clinical significance: |
Carbon monoxide combines irreversibly with hemoglobin in a manner almost identical to oxygen, resulting in a decrease in the amount of oxygen carried by hemoglobin. Carbon monoxide may reach dangerous levels in homes and industrial plants using coal and petroleum combustion heating plants without adequate ventilation. | |
