Geisinger Epic Procedure Code: LAB3155         Geisinger Epic ID: 26812

Specimen type:
Platelet-free plasma AND serum AND EDTA whole blood
Preferred collection container:
Alternate Collection Container:
Other size blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tubes (e.g., 1.8 mL, 4.5 mL)
Specimen required:
Five (5) 1 mL aliquots of platelet-free citrated plasma and one (1) 1 mL aliquot of serum and one (1) 1 mL aliquot of EDTA plasma and one (1) lavender-top EDTA whole blood.
Special notes:
Collect three (3) 2.7 mL blue-top tubes (3.2% sodium citrate) and one (1) 6 mL red-top tube (non-serum separator), and two (2) lavender-top (EDTA) tubes.
Patient preparation:
Must be off heparin 48 hours prior to testing; must be off Coumadin 2 weeks prior to testing.

Specimen processing instructions:
Centrifuge one (1) lavender-top tube and clotted red-top tube top for 15 minutes at 2500 x g and blue-top tubes at the designated speed and time to obtain platelet-poor plasma (< 10,000/uL). Remove plasma and re-spin the plasma for 10 minutes at 2500 x g. Remove the supernatant platelet free plasma into three (3) 1 mL aliquots, freeze and transport frozen.
Transport temperature:
Five (5) aliquots of citrated plasma frozen, one (1) aliquot of serum refrigerated, one aliquot of EDTA plasma frozen, one EDTA lavender whole blood refrigerated.
Specimen stability:
Frozen: -20°C for 30 days, -70°C for 6 months.
Rejection criteria:
Clotted specimen.

Reference interval:
See individual test members.

Test includes:
Prothrombin time, lupus sensitive APTT, Antithrombin, Protein C, Protein S, Homocystein, Anticardiolipin Antibodies, DRVV, Factor VIII, Fibrinogen. Mixing studies, platelet neutralization, and beta 2 glycoprotein if needed. Factor V Leiden and prothrombin gene mutation if needed.
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)
THRMPC, Hypercoagulation panel with interpretation
Thrombophilic panel with interpretation, thrombotic
Clinical significance:
This thrombosis profile includes all necessary screening tests and confirmatory (if indicated) tests to rule out if a patient has or is at risk for a hypercoagulable event.
