SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Allow to clot. Centrifuge and submit 0.5 mL serum. 
Transport temperature:
 Refrigerated (preferred). Room temperature (stable 8 hours) and frozen specimens also acceptable.
Specimen stability:
 Room temperature: 8 hours. 2-8°C: 7 days. Frozen: 6 months.
Rejection criteria:
 Specimen stability exceeded; specimen grossly hemolyzed.

Interpretation

Negative

Absence of detectable mumps virus IgG antibodies. A negative result generally indicates that the patient has not been infected and is susceptible to mumps. If the subject has no history of mumps, has not been previously vaccinated and exposure to mumps virus is suspected despite a negative finding, a second sample should be collected no less than 1-2 weeks later.

Equivocal

Equivocal samples should be retested. If the result remains equivocal after repeat testing, a second sample should be recollected no less than 1-2 weeks later.

Positive

Presence of detectable mumps virus IgG antibodies. A positive result generally indicates past exposure to mumps virus or previous vaccination.

Clinical significance:
Mumps is an acute, generally self-limiting, contagious disese with moderate fever of short duration. A positive mumps IgG antibody in conjunction with clinical findings may aid in the determination of immune status and/or aid in the diagnosis of mumps infections. Antibody response to vaccination is typically lower than that of a natural infection. Acute infection is diagnosed by testing for mumps IgM antibody.
