Patient preparation:
Patient must be 15 weeks to 22 weeks, 6 days gestation.

Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.
Specimen stability:
Room temperature: 14 days. Refrigerated (2-8°C): 14 days. Frozen(-20°C): 14 days.
Rejection criteria:
If stability limit is exceeded or if specimen is lipemic, icteric, or hemolyzed.

Clinical significance:
Maternal serum AFP is a prenatal screening test used to screen for open neural tube defects. This is not a diagnostic test. MATAFP alone should not be used to screen for chromosomal abnormalities.
