TEST DETAILS |
||
Reference interval: |
Negative. Cutoff concentration ethylene glycol: 10 mg/dL |
|
Additional information: |
For 5% of patients with history of chronic alcohol consumption, elevated result between 10 and 35 mg/dL may be expected due to high concentration of 2,3-butanediol. Propylene glycol is a known compound that interferes with this assay. Laboratory will notify the ordering provider if propylene glycol interference is suspected.
CPT code(s): |

Test includes: |
Serum ethylene glycol.
Methodology: |
Enzymatic |
|
Synonyms: |
ETHGLY
|
|
Clinical significance: |
Ethylene glycol screen is used to evaluate and monitor ethylene glycol toxicity. Ingestion of ethylene glycol can result in central nervous system depression (0.5-12 hrs. post ingestion), cardiopulmonary compromise (12-36 hrs. post ingestion) and renal insufficiency (24-72 hrs. post ingestion) from toxic metabolites.
