SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type:

Specimen required:
Two 2mL Greiner blue-top/white-ring tubes of whole blood are required for each test.
Special notes:
Do not centrifuge specimen. Do not place tube in pneumatic tube system. Draw order should be maintained, draw this tube prior to any other anticoagulant or additive tubes. Do Not Refrigerate or freeze tube. Specimen stable for only 4 hours. If drawing Verify Now Aspirin analysis, specimen needs to be drawn in a separate tube.

If drawing Verify Now Aspirin analysis, specimen needs to be drawn in a separate tube. 
Transport temperature:
Room temperature.
Specimen stability:
4 hours.
Rejection criteria:
Overfilled tube, underfilled tube, stability limit exceeded, tube system use, centrifugation of whole blood.

Reference interval:
182-335 PRU (P2Y12 reaction units)
Interpretation guide:
  1. Aspirin- Effective drug use will manifest in a reading of ARU below the normal range.
  2. P2Y12 Inhibitors - Effective drug use will manifest in a reading of PRU below the normal range.
  3. Results lower than the low reference range (182) are highly specific for a P2Y12 Inhibitor effect.
  4. A time of dosing effect was noted on the validation studies. If the sample was drawn 12 hours after administration of the medication, a normal PRU test will be observed.

Clinical significance:
Plavix or similar drugs are used as an anticoagulant prior to surgery. Effective drug use will result in a lower answer than the reference range. Resistance is seen in a small number of patients and will manifest as a normal value with drug usage confirmed.
