Allow serum to clot. Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma within 2 hours of collection. Specimen must be processed cold. Place specimen on ice. Deliver to testing area and assay immediately. Off-campus lab or non-testing performing site: Specimen should be sent as frozen serum aliquot. Analysis should be done immediately, or as soon as frozen specimen is thawed, and mixed well upon receipt. |

Clinical significance: |
In patient who has tumor lysis syndrome, rasburicase may be used to manage the elevation of uric acid. Keeping the specimen cold will prevent breakdown of uric acid by rasburicase ex vivo. This allows for more accurate measurement of the uric acid level in vivo. | |
