0.5 mL serum; minimum 0.3 mL.

Specimen processing instructions:
Allow to clot. Centrifuge serum at 1100-2000g for 10 minutes. Separate from cells immediately. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated, 2-8°C.
Specimen stability:
Room temperature: 8 hours. Refrigerated: 4 days. Frozen: 24 weeks.
Rejection criteria:
Grossly hemolyzed, lipemic or samples containing particulate material. Stability limits exceeded.

Interpretation guide:
Deficient <20 ng/mL
Insufficient 20 - 29 ng/mL
Recommended/Optimum 30 - 50 ng/mL
Vitamin D intoxication is rare. If suspicious of Vitamin D toxicity, evaluation of serum calcium and PTH is recommended.

Clinical significance:
Vitamin D3 and Vitamin D2 are the most abundant forms of vitamin D in the body. Vitamin D3 is synthesized in the skin while D2 is derived from nutritional sources. D3 and D2 are converted to 25OH vitamin D in the liver. 25OH Vitamin D is the best indicator of vitamin D nutritional status.
