6 mL dark blue-top (K2 EDTA) tube
3 mL lavender-top (K2 EDTA) tube
2.7 mL blue-top (3.2% sodium citrate) tube

1.0 mL serum (preferred) or plasma; minimum 0.7 mL.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Allow to clot. Centrifuge 10 minutes at 3000 rpm. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated. Specimen should be fresh, nonhemolyzed, nonlipemic, and should not be thawed repeatedly and refrozen.
Specimen stability:
Refrigerated: 7 days. Frozen: 30 days.
Rejection criteria:
Hemolyzed or lipemic specimens. Specimens received at room temperature.

Clinical significance:
HTLV-I is associated with adult T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia and B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia. HTLV-II is less common and is associated with neoplasias of the CD8 T lymphocytes. Blood donor screening began in 1998. Line Immunoassay (LIA) is used for confirmation of Antibody testing.
