40-45 mg/dL Borderline
< 40 mg/dL Low (Undesirable)
>= 60 mg/dL High (Desirable)
< 50 mg/dL Low (Undesirable) for female
< 40 mg/dL Low (Undesirable) for male

Clinical significance:
HDL is inversely related to the risk for cardiovascular disease. It increases following regular exercise, moderate alcohol consumption, and with oral esterogen therapy. Decreased levels are associated with obesity, stress, cigarette smoking and diabetes mellitus.
