SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type:
Preferred specimens: CSF, plasma, serum (no anticoagulant) or whole blood; bone marrow or fresh tissue also acceptable.

White-top K2 EDTA plasma preparation tube (PPT)
Specimen required:
1 mL CSF, plasma, serum or whole blood (preferred). 1 mL bone marrow or 3 mm3 tissue also acceptable.
Special notes:
Plasma: Collect blood in sterile tubes containing EDTA as anticoagulant or in Plasma Preparation Tubes (PPTs).
Whole blood: Collect whole blood in sterile tubes containing EDTA as anticoagulant.
Serum: Collect blood in sterile tubes with no anticoagulants; serum separator tubes (SSTs) are recommended.
CSF: Collect in a sterile, plastic, leakproof container.
Fresh tissue: Collect in a sterile, plastic, leakproof container.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Transfer plasma to sterile, plastic screw-capped tubes and store refrigerated or frozen. It is not necessary to transfer the plasma from a PPT tube to aliquot tubes. Serum: Allow blood to clot at room temperature and separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer serum to sterile, plastic, screw-capped, aliquot tubes and store refrigerated or frozen. 
Transport temperature:
Plasma: Store refrigerated or frozen. Whole blood: Do not freeze whole blood. Store collected whole blood at room temperature. Serum: Allow blood to clot at room temperature and separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer serum to sterile, plastic, screw-capped, aliquot tubes and store refrigerated or frozen. CSF: Store refrigerated or frozen. Fresh tissue: Frozen. Avoid repeated freezing and thawing of specimens.
Specimen stability:
CSF: Room Temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 8 days. Frozen: 30 days
Plasma: Room Temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 8 days. Frozen: 30 days.
Serum: Room Temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 8 days. Frozen: 30 days.
Whole Blood: Room Temperature: 48 hours. Refrigerated: 8 days. Frozen: Unacceptable.
Rejection criteria:
Specimens collected in heparin tubes are unacceptable for testing and will be rejected. Do not freeze whole blood. Specimens beyond stability limits as outlined above.
