Clinical significance:
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus with a range of infection severity ranging from mild infection (West Nile Fever in 20% of patients infected) to meningitis, encephalitis (less than 1% of patients infected), and death. PCR testing is highly specific for West Nile Virus. See West Nile Virus: Detection with Immunologic and RT-PCR Assays in the Infectious Disease chapter, Interpretive Information section.
