Specimen type:
Whole blood and serum.
Preferred collection container:
Specimen required:
One (1) 2 mL EDTA lavender-top tube and two (2) 3.5 mL gold-top serum separator tubes. GRL: Two (2) blood smears made from the lavender-top tube.
Special notes:
Draw one (1) 2 mL EDTA lavender and two (2) 3.5 mL gold-top serum separator tubes. Must also order CBCD and Peripheral Smear (PERS). Lavender-top tube is to be delivered to Hematology. Gold-top tubes to be delivered to Chemistry to be tracked for possible added tests. A brief patient history is to be provided with the request. GRL: Submit two (2) blood smears made from the lavender-top tube within 8 hours of collection.

Specimen processing instructions:
Do not centrifuge the lavender-top tube.
GRLs: Prepare two (2) blood smears from the lavender-top tube as soon as possible after collection. Gold-top tubes only: Allow to clot. Centrifuge 10 minutes at 3000 rpm. Send lavender-top tube, gold-top tube and smears with requisition. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature.
Specimen stability:
Lavender tube: Refrigerated 72 hours. Room temperature: 36 hours. Blood smears: Slides must be made from refrigerated tube within 16 hours of collection or within 8 hours of collection when kept at room temperature. Gold-top tube: Refrigerated 3 days.
