SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type:
24-hour urine.
Preferred collection container:
Specimen required:
7 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine in a metal-free, acid-washed container; minimum 5 mL.
Special notes:
Preserve 24-hour urine with 25 mL 50% Acetic Acid or 30 mL 6N HCl during collection. Mix well. Estimate total collection volume from 24-hour urine container. Remove required aliquot. Record total volume on both aliquot tube and request slip (if applicable).
Patient preparation:
Patient should refrain from taking vitamins or mineral supplements for at least three days before collection.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Prepare 7 mL aliquot of 24-hour urine specimen. Place in an acid washed metal free aliquot container only. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred).
Specimen stability:
Room Temperature: 5 days. Refrigerated: 5 days. Frozen: 2 weeks.
Rejection criteria:
Stability limits exceeded.
