SPECIMEN COLLECTION
Specimen type:

Lavender-top (K2 EDTA) microcollection tube
Specimen required:
Tube: EDTA lavender-top tube properly filled (1.6 mL of blood is minimum for acceptable sample).
Microcollection tube (K2 EDTA): 500 uL is proper fill. Minimum acceptable will be 250 uL (microcollection tube has lines to indicate the 250 and 500 uL volumes).

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Specimen processing instructions:
Do not centrifuge or freeze. 
Transport temperature:
Refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature.
Specimen stability:
Refrigerated: 2 weeks. Room temperature: 4 hours.
Rejection criteria:
Frozen, clotted, hemolyzed, underfilled, overfilled, or centrifuged sample.

Negative.
Additional information:
Test is unreliable in infants under 6 months of age.
Interfering Substances: 
  1. Elevated levels of Hgb F can cause false negative results.
  2. Recent transfusions can cause false positive and false negative results.
  3. Some rare hemoglobin variants such as Hgb C Harlem or C Georgetown may give a false positive reaction.
  4. All positive or questionable results should be further evaluated with hemoglobin electrophoresis.
