Fresh non-formed stool.
Preferred collection container:
Specimen required:
Stool in sterile specimen container.
Special notes:
See stool test selection algorithm. See Microbiology Collection Appendix for collection instructions. Collect specimen as soon as possible after onset of symptoms. Check expiration date on transport device before use.

SPECIMEN PROCESSING
Transport temperature:
Refrigerate (2-8°C) up to 72 hours from collection. Please contact Microbiology for special instructions if the storage/transport time exceeds 72 hours from time of collection. Do not freeze specimens.
Specimen stability:
Stable up to 72 hours refrigerated at 2-8°C
Rejection criteria:
Specimens that are not stored or transported at 2-8°C. Specimens on swabs. Specimens collected in formalin, PVA, MF, SAF, or ETM. Improperly labeled/identified patient samples. Stools containing barium. Quantity insufficient. Frozen specimens.

Clinical significance:
